Extremely honest review: the promised neverland manga

I read the promised neverland manga in three days, and it was a masterpiece.

Spoiler alert !!!!!

So i have been hearing a lot about this anime called the promised neverland, and i stumbled upon a lot of the character’s pictures and memes, and i understood none of it. Of course the first thing that came to my mind were thoughts such as : great another orange haired boy as main lead… another weird anime about children !! Yes Emma DOES look like a boy, let’s just put that out there.

I was never the slightest bit interested in that anime until this month, june 2021. So i have this app on my phone where i watch anime from time to time, and it’s been so long since i last used it. I went navigating on the app and the name neverland pops up in my mind. So i looked it up and found that it’s two seasons and they are very short compared to other animes i know of, so i was like : meh let’s just give it a try.

I watched the first episode and that was it. I finished the whole season in one day. And i was not disappointed. The story was great and i was impressed by the details, and yes i cried when norman was « shipped » and it broke my heart that Emma and Ray couldn’t do anything about it to save him. And Of course i hated their « mama ».

The very next day i started season 2 . I was so invested and i wanted to know more about what happens, but when i was at episode 4 i think, the story seemed less interesting than season 1 that’s for sure. The events were not what i expected. I was disappointed. But hey, i can’t say that season 2 was bad since i haven’t finished it till the moment.  However , since i was extremely interested in knowing what happened to the lot .. i decided to check the manga out. I do not usually read mangas of anime i watched,  but i was so curious so i did.

I read it from the 1st chapter and i started noticing a lot of details that was not put in the anime, so i automatically fell in love even more with the manga because it provided me with the bigger image i needed.

When Emma and the kids were escaping from plantation 3 in the anime, Isabella catches on to them right before Emma jumps. They have this unnecessary goodbye moment where Emma wastes more time on the wall rather than running away. But in the manga, when Isabella arrived it was too late and the kids were nowhere to be seen, they cut the ropes and run away.. exactly as they should !

Another thing that surprised me the most, was them finding a whole grown up man in the shelter MR.minerva left them. Since that was completely out of the anime. If my memory serves me correctly, in the anime they found the hideout empty and deserted. Yuugo was not in it. And they also received the recorded call of minerva there in the shelter, rather than Goldy pond as in the manga. I feel like they rushed season 2 so much that they cut off a big chunk of  the story and a lot of important events were none existant.

So my personal advice to you if you either watched both seasons or only the first one and you were amazed by the great story and wanted more, i Highly, Highly recommend you to read the manga, it’s a masterpiece.

So norman being the badass that he is, he broke free and helped other children and also played an important role in fighting corrupted demons and saving  more cattle children. Then he met Emma and Ray and Everyone and it was all great and all.. his plan though was to kill all the monsters as he believed only that way they can live with a smile and be safe in this crazy world.

However Emma was being the idealistic lead character as ever, and she didn’t want the demons to die. She dreams of a world where they can co-existe and not being eaten by them.. as if.. i was so mad and so done with her at that point, though at the end it turned out not all demons are bad and they eat just to survive and all.  If i was her, and saw connie dead after i Emma bid her farwell thinking she was being adopted, i would not make that choice. Also, thinking back at all the kids who died and don’t even get me started about the massproduction factories.. yikes.. the only word that can describe them is grosse.

They made me sick, yet Emma wanted everyone who lost their friends and suffered for years to just co-existe with demons taking the risk of them being their food again. I don’t know how Ray was convinced at first, but whatever.

That was a very unrealistic anime thing in that situation.

Regardless, at the end they succeed and isabella sides with them and protects Emma from a deadly attack, redeeming herself. However !!! i wanted more Ray and Isabella moments, since they revealed that ray was her real son, i was waiting for an emotional confession from her part or just Ray telling Norman and Emma that she is his mum, but none of this happened. Ray played dumb and Isabella died just like that.

I was kinda upset it didn’t go that way.

Let’s talk about the ending  though, i noticed a lot of people saying how trashy the end of season 2 was.. But again, the manga is different. The ending was satisfying, though it would have been even greater if they showed Emma and the others growing older and having families of their own. But just the fact that  they met safely at the human world is good enough.

If you think that the story makes no sense in season 2, and it’s crazy, that’s probably because they did not follow the manga.  So yeah go read it and stop complaining about 11 episodes of trash.
